Google My Business (GMB) is now allowing local business owners to publish a description of their business within their GMB listing. This change comes several weeks after Google announced they would be allowing restaurant owners to publish menu items within their Google My Business listing. Business owners were previously able to provide descriptions for their business until the feature was discontinued in 2016. Google has now decided to bring it back.
To publish your business description, login to your Google My Business account. Click on the “info” button and then click on “add business description”. Business owners will be given 750 characters which is roughly the character space of two and half tweets on Twitter. As a business owner, it’s very important to include your company's services and other important keywords in your GMB business description. Here is a sample business description provided via Google’s support page.
We are an independent ice cream shop located steps from the center of town, and are proud to be the favorite for locals to meet friends for a cone or call for a fresh pizza, delivered straight to their home. We serve 35 flavors of homemade, hand-churned ice creams and sorbets year-round, and the pizza oven turns out New York-style pies every day from midday until close. Come see us today!
Business descriptions will also be displayed on the Google Maps interface as well. Having a well-optimized Google My Business listing is crucial in an age where mobile searches and mapping systems are dominating local searches. Businesses should also have a reputation management strategy in place where they seek positive reviews from former customers and respond to all Google reviews in a timely manner.
